DSC_4559Bhubaneswar, 26.02.0124: A seminar on “From exclusion to Inclusion, Promotion of Universal Accessibility” was organized by the CSR and CD committee of Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UCCI) at the conference hall of the Chamber here on Wednesday. Addressing the problem of exclusion of persons with disability, the seminar covered an array of problems related to the issue and tried to figure out a solution.

“Change in the mentality and creating a conducive atmosphere for the persons with disabilities are the paramount requirements” said, DSC_4543Dr. Kashturi Mohapatra, Chairperson, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. Citing various examples of exclusion of persons with disabilities from the society she said, “The Constitution of India mandated Equality of status and opportunity. It becomes meaningful only when they are able to access information and facilities. State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities of Odisha, is now able to provide a giant leap but a small step towards an “access for all” world.”

Mr. Ram Kishore Sharma, Rehabilitation Officer, Ministry of Labour & Employment, DGE&T, Govt. of India said, “Disabled people are not only deprived but clearly ignored. They are not even counted as a part of the society.” Presenting the statistics he said “the population of persons with disabilities in India is 2.65 crores which amount to around 3% of the total population. We just can’t ignore such a number”.

Ms. Anjilee Agarwal, Samarthyam, National Centre for Accessible Environments, New Delhi made a presentation on the topic. She emphasized on equipping our day to day world for persons with disabilities. “simple steps like building ramps, placing everything at an adjustable height, fitting handrails and bars will help persons with disabilities to live their life easily with dignity”, she said.

Other luminaries who also put forward their views were Mrs. Arati Ahuja, Principal Secretary to Government, Women and Child Development Department, Govt. of Odisha and Mr. Arun Mishra, Deputy Vice President, TATA steel Ltd. (Kalinga Nagar Project).

Dr. Geeta Padhi , Chairperson, CSR & CD Committee, UCCI presided over the seminar. While Mr. Prabhakar Rout, Member, CSR & CD committee welcomed the guests to the dais, Mr. Sanjeev Mohapatra, Member, CSR & CD committee presented the vote of thanks.

The Members of the CSR & CD committee, namely Mr. Prabhakar Rout, Mrs. Jayanti Jagdev, Mr. Kuldeep Gupta, Mr. Manoj Prusty, Mr. Nilambar Rath, Mrs. Samal and Mr. Sanjeev Mohapatra were felicitated for their outstanding participation and support to the social works being done by the UCCI.
