The Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UCCI), an apex Chamber of Mega, Large & MSME Industries and Trade & Services, in the state of Odisha, celebrates Golden Jubilee Year 2014.

photo 1In 1962, Hon’ble Sri Biju Patnaik expressed the view that industries and business leaders of Odisha should start a Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Odisha in line with the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry. His view inspired some of the Business leaders namely, Sri K. K. Iyengar, Sri V. S. S. Mani,  Sri Madhusudan Padhym, Sri B. Mohanty, Sri Khatau Sunderdas,  Sri K. G. Ghatak, Sri G. N. Agarwalla.

They got together and fructified the suggestion of the great leader Sri Biju Patanaik and informally formed the Chamber of Commerce of Odisha. It took its formal legal shape when the Chamber got incorporated on 13th January 1964 as ‘Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry Ltd.’ The Chamber most respectfully pays its homage to the above departed souls & Late Sri Biju Patnaik who conceived the formation of UCCI.

Our respectful homage is also due to all the past Presidents of the Chamber who are no more with us. They had nurtured this organization from a Small assembly of 7 members to more than 500 members. Our thankful indebtedness to the other Past Presidents and Honorary Secretaries who have been guiding the Chamber to go from strength to strength today representing Industry, Trade & Commerce, Service Sector and Professionals in our day-today activities.

The Chamber has been in the vanguard of Orissa’s Commercial & Industrial resurgence. Throughout its journey spanning over 50 years, the Chamber has maintained its bow steady, undaunted by the challenges of time.  Expertise gained in diverse aspects of Industry & Trade over the years, has made the Chamber a consultative forum, for formulation and implementation of various policies of the Government, both in the Centre and State. The Chamber is represented in 42 forums of Government in advisory and statutory forums.

An enviable strength of 500 members reflect the commitment of the Chamber in fulfilling its objectives and its involved concern for its constituents. In the pink of its health, the Chamber is all geared up to address the needs of the emergent, and emerging trends through adjustments, innovations, and ingenuity in management as well as technological innovation for its constituents.

While serving its primary objectives with dedication and galvanizing the interest of the members for a better tomorrow, the Chamber has set its goal to serve the community through dispensation of its social responsibilities. The Chamber has been able to interact with the Government and have successfully addressed the problems of its members by reduction of VAT on specific items, reduction in free power by Captive Power Plants, Allotment of Coal to industries in the State, issuance of mortgage rights by IDCO to industries and a host of other problems that the industries and trades face for which amicable solutions have been found with both Government of Odisha and India.

Many district level associations are affiliated to the Chamber like, Balasore Chamber of Industries & Commerce, Association of Industrial Entrepreneurs of Bhubaneswar (AIEBA), All Orissa S.E. Railway Builder’s Association, The Seafood Exporters Association of India-Odisha Region, Orissa Electrical Electronics Manufacturers Association, Plywood & Glass Traders Association & Utkal Bidi Merchants Association etc.

The Utkal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UCCI) being the Apex body of Industry, Trade and Commerce & Service Sectors, Banks & Individual professionals of the State, thus reflect the views, perceptions and interests of its constituents in a proactive and constructive manner within its own community as well as the Government and various other Professional Bodies. It is well respected for its balanced and studied approach in matters pertaining to development of trade and industry, promotion of government-industry inter-linkages and pursuing sensible economic policies.

The Chamber has a large number of exporting and importing members like, MMTC, IFFCO, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Paradeep Phosphates, NALCO, Magnum Sea-foods, Falcon Marine etc. and also a number of Seafood and Mineral Exporting Units, apart from a number of Manufacturing units. The Chamber embarks upon its Golden Jubilee year from 13th January 2014. A year-long programme is planned beginning with the inauguration of its Corporate building by Hon’ble Sj. Naveen Patnaik, the very progressive and dynamic Chief Minister of Odisha along with flagging off of the Golden Jubilee Celebration year of the Chamber.

A Mega Seminar on CSR on “Rights of Children with Special Needs” is being organised on 18th January with Madam Poonam Natrajan, Chairperson of National Trust of welfare of Person with Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism & Multiple Disability as Chief Guest. The Chamber itself has started CSR activities with its own fund and contribution by its members to implement the social welfare activities.

A Mega Exhibition under the banner “ODISHA MOVES FORWARD” is planned from 22nd – 25th February 2014 in Bhubaneswar as rightly Odisha has made phenomenal progress under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister, Sj. Naveen Patnaik in the last 15 years.  An innovation and business idea competition will be held amongst management and engineering students of Odisha with cash prizes for 3 best judged business plans and UCCI will help to get funding for grounding of the business ideas of these young entrepreneurs.

Several national & international level Seminars on Food Processing, Steel & Mines, Forest & Environment, Urban Development, Mining and Geology, Power & Infrastructure, Renewable energy are being planned throughout the year, to showcase the achievements of the Odisha Government along with the business community and what can be done to place Odisha as a leader amongst all the States of India.
