The play “Chandramara Chudi” (Bangles of Chandrama) based on widely discussed poem of the eminent Odia poet Padmashree Ramakant Rath unfolds the life sketch of a street prostitute “Chandrama’, who accepts prostitution as only alternative to live on even after the demise of her sick husband. Our society at large being a vital part of her state of existence has always been apathetic towards her go of life a strong force of humiliation for her rather. The play and the poem as well projects a meaningful note of satire on social rule makers who place a minor section of society in finer order of value system closing door to a massive number of the populace who live on accepting disastrous conditions of crude reality.
The play unveils the irony of the existence of a harlot who is treated as an inferior creature in our social system when the system itself is a vital part of her misery and solitary life. The director Sriman N. Mishra interprets the play with the help of presentational behavior of suggestive realism, symbolism and demonstration, activating fertility of satire as its undertone. A large section of the society plays the role of mockers who happen to be bed partners of the harlot. The director and the poet as well pose grave question mark to the projection of the lives of harlots as dark corners of human history and the act of prostitution as a heinous crime where the valued class of handful few minority of global populace commit more heinous crimes, live a life of dignity as privileged community of this so called civilized society.
