Koraput, 02nd April, 2016: Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Orissa, Koraput has written a distinctive book “Periodical Press and Colonial Modernity” which was launched, today, at Odisha State Archives, Bhubaneswar organised by Oxford University Press, Global Academic Publishing.
The book was launched by renowned poet of Odisha Mr. Ramakant Rath in the programme. Shri Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Editor of the Sambad was also present at the occasion. This is the 28th book of Prof. Mohanty published by an international publishing house.
“Tracing the growth and decline of the Odia periodical press, the book studies its interface with colonial modernity in the region. It explores various aspects of two pioneering Odia magazines—the newspaper journal Utkal Dipika and the literary journal Utkal Sahitya—their economic and political bases, their patronage systems, the cultural and ideological backgrounds of their editors, and the role these journals played in shaping the Odia literary sensibility and identity”, said the author.
“The Periodical Press and Colonial Modernity, Odisha 1866-1936 is an excellent research book on the society during the colonial period of Odisha presented by Prof. Mohanty”, said the Chief Guest Ramakant Rath while launching of the book.
Eminent writer of Odia Advisory Board of Sahitya Academi, Dr. Gaurahari Das elaborated about the history of printing press and periodicals of Odisha during the colonial period reflected in the book.
Large numbers of writers, poets, academicians and social thinkers were present in the programme.
